GM Bankruptcy Could Create Financial Devastation for Families
The GM Bankruptcy is causing six dealerships around California to be closed. These closures will create more bad news for California’s economy by increasing the already high unemployment rate of 11 percent, and adding financial stress to the families involved in these cutbacks.
Statistics show that financial strain is one of the leading causes of divorce and that divorce itself places additional strains on the economy and on business. This is a distressing cycle for which California’s leading marriage-support organization offers some new reassurance.
Can this cycle really be broken? The California Healthy Marriages Coalition believes it can. One approach is by informing the public about the tremendous overall cost of divorce on our society, as well to the workplace.
A recent report commissioned by the Institute of American Values identified the taxpayer cost of family fragmentation in California at $12 billion. These social services costs fall through to taxpayers. Research also shows that divorce begets many other social ills, from poverty to health problems and juvenile delinquency. Divorce also impacts the corporate financial bottom line.
Employees going through divorce are less productive at work and more likely to call in sick, which, according to a large national study, costs companies about $8,000 per divorce. Perhaps General Motors should take note.
Can couples create more stable relationships? Dennis Stoica, President of the California Healthy Marriages Coalition (CHMC), says that there are easy ways for couples to invest in making their relationship successful. One approach is through Marriage Education and Relationship Skills Training.
The Federal government provides funding to organizations like CHMC to create access to classes for couples and individuals to learn communication skills that help strengthen relationships. Dennis Stoica said, “We continually monitor the benefits of Marriage Education and Relationship Skills classes with Outcome Evaluation reports. These reports demonstrate that these classes not only help couples learn communication skills but they also help increase marital happiness, even six months after the class. If individuals and couples take the time to learn these skills, I believe we can transform our culture and our economy.”
For the past four years, CHMC has taught relationship-building skills to California individuals and couples. Local class information is available at www.CaMarriage.com.
