Eight Facts That Separate the Sexes

The battle between the sexes rages constantly. Casual prejudices are rife between men and women in every setting – in the office, on the bus, over coffee. Although most of this is just playful banter, it’s always good to have a bit of ammo lined up for the next battle. Here are eight surprising facts about men and women you may not have heard before:
- We all begin as women. In the womb, we automatically take on our mother’s DNA and start to develop as females for the first six weeks of embryonic growth. After this, the Y chromosome comes in to play, releasing androgens such as testosterone, which halt the development of female characteristics. So, for you singles, next time you’re dating a guy who throws an unacceptably sexist comment your way, just calmly explain that, biologically, he began life as a woman so is ultimately insulting himself as much as you!
- There are more baby boys than baby girls. Recent research has shown that every time 100 girls are born, 107 boys come in to the world. This enhanced birth rate of boys is believed to be linked to their high mortality rate. Although more boys are born, less survive – they are 25% more likely to die during infancy than girls.
- A popular theory, and one which has fed misogynists for centuries, is that men have bigger brains than women. This is certainly true but remains largely unconnected with intelligence. Male brains are 10% larger because they need extra neurones to control their larger body mass and stature.
- It has also been revealed that women are better skilled at using both sides of their brain simultaneously, which makes them more successful multi-taskers. Males, on the other hand, use one side of the brain and devote all of their concentration to the task in hand.
- While some may claim that men are more intelligent than women, tests have shown that boys in their teens are four times more likely than girls to drop out of school. They also make up three-quarters of the children submitted for special education classes.
- Following the ‘dropping-out’ trend, men also have far more addictive personalities than women. They are a massive three times more likely to become alcoholics and are also twice as likely as women to use and abuse recreational drugs.
- Men are also far more likely to be both murdered and murderers. There are 10 times more male killers than female ones out there. Men are also four times more likely to be killed than women, by both male and female murderers. Maybe men are just that little bit more infuriating!
- World-wide, men have a lower life expectancy than women. While males average 64.52 years of life, women add almost five years to this, living to 68.76 years on average. Men also, reportedly, have higher death rates than women in all 15 leading causes of death, with the exception of Alzheimer’s.
So, don’t let any sexist comments get to you. There are plenty of advantages of being both male and female. If you’re in Cardiff dating, at a family picnic or in the office and this topic comes up, at least now you’ll have a few more useful facts up your sleeve.
